LUIS HERRERA

(HUMAN DOG TRAINER)

Luis began his career as a dog trainer in Mexico in 2000, where he was learning and practicing Schutzhund at the Police Academy. Later, he continued in southeast Mexico, where he was providing free/low-cost group classes in Cancun. Luis also had the opportunity to help different rescue groups by rehabilitating dogs and organizing fundraisers.

In 2010, he arrived in Austin, Texas with the vision of being a professional dog trainer. His first job interacting with dogs in the U.S. was working as an adoption counselor with Austin Pets Alive at the South Congress location, as well as multiple PetSmart locations.

One year later, Luis began working at Austin Animal Center. He saw first-hand how the majority of abandoned pets did not have much knowledge on how to behave or socialize. These types of dogs get adopted less frequently because people don’t have access to the right resources to help them once they’re in the home, leaving endless dogs with great potential stuck in the shelter. So, the idea of offering low-cost classes to train dogs was born. Also recognizing that there were no dog training options for the Hispanic community, he strived to make these services available to communities of all backgrounds.

Continuing his education, Luis began more dog training practices with Training by Tara and then with the Canine Center For Training and Behavior until 2021. He has participated in many different seminars and conferences, always with the goal of learning and putting into practice different techniques that make the dog-owner relationship more stable, natural, efficient, and always with respect.

Luis currently works with all breeds and ages of dogs and teaches a wide variety of classes, ranging from basic to advanced obedience training. He also specializes in behavior modifications, such as fear, aggression and more.
